What is BrowseAloud?
BrowseAloud is a free program that reads out all website text including portable document format (PDF) files and Word documents. Once installed BrowseAloud can be set to automatically read text when you highlight it. Although not designed to replace a screen reader, BrowseAloud can help people who use assistive technologies or have low literary skills to navigate our website.
Downloading BrowseAloud
1. Go to the Downloads section of the BrowseAloud website (Opens in new window)
2. Chose your platform (PC or Mac)
3. Save the download button and save the file to your computer
4. Open the file (you'll need a program like WinZip, WinRAR or StuffIt to do this) and double click the install (.exe) file.
5. Find and open Zip folder and click on the main file to install BrowseAloud on your computer.
Using BrowseAloud
1. Make sure you have some speakers or headphones and they are plugged in and turned on.
2. Highlight the text you want read to you (click and drag the mouse over the text).
3. Right click on the selected area and chose "Speak selection" from the menu.
